Kansas Advocates Launch Cannabis Justice Coalition to Push Legalization

7 May 2024

A bipartisan group called the Cannabis Justice Coalition has emerged in Kansas, campaigning for the legalization of recreational cannabis and the clearing of marijuana-related criminal records. Although 67.2% of Kansans support legalizing cannabis for adult use, state lawmakers have remained resistant to change. In response, the coalition is prioritizing voter education and supporting pro-legalization candidates in preparation for the 2024 elections.

Launched on May 7, 2024, the coalition, led by a Prairie Village City Council member, aims to bridge the gap between public opinion and legislative inaction. Board members and attorneys stress the economic, medical, and social benefits of cannabis legalization. The group emphasizes a statewide policy to prevent a fragmented system of local cannabis laws. For those interested, Kansas lawmakers’ legislative proposals on cannabis, such as the 2024 medical marijuana pilot program bill, are available through the Kansas Legislature’s website.

The coalition also advocates aligning Kansas marijuana laws with those of neighboring states like Colorado and Missouri, where legalization has already generated substantial tax revenue and relieved criminal justice systems. Advocates argue that cannabis tax revenue could bolster Medicaid services and fund university-led agricultural cannabis research, benefiting Kansas' agriculture economy.
